It's crucial for the bad guys not to let their identity be revealed. If they're discovered then good guys won't select them to go on the quests.
There are also character cards like Merlin and Morgana and others that take on special roles and add more to the game.
But I would say those cards are meant for games with more people than 4. The rules are simple. Triumph over evil or don't get caught trying to thwart the good guys' plans.
There are more rules that explain the mechanics better, but this review is just a general over view. All in all this is a fun family favorite and one of the more played games in our house and everyone we played with have enjoyed it.
Screen your cards first and remove whatever ones you feel may be inappropriate. The game is easily played without these advanced character cards.
But this is a game that revolves around deception so if that's not something you're comfortable with letting younger kids play, then it may not be for you.
Avalon is one of the most fun party games I think I have ever played, and it's a game that our group continually wants to see on the table. The special character cards Merlin, Assassin, etc.
We have one person in our friend group who is notorious for not understanding rules, actions, or anything else in a game outside of maybe whether the pictures are pretty, and even he was able to grasp Avalon quickly and without slowing everyone else down.
That's the big selling point here, I think: Avalon is a party game that you can whip out with a group of friends and basically start playing immediately.
It doesn't need much explaining, the rules aren't complicated, and the vast majority of the gameplay is just how your friends interact with other rather than how they interact with the game's mechanics and systems.
Because Avalon has a lot of deception and accusation we spend a lot of time yelling at each other , I could see it pushing some groups into an argument.
This has become one of my favorite party games to play. The max players is 10, I believe. I think you may be able to play with just 3 people, but the bigger the group, the better the game gets.
It's similar to mafia in that there are "evil" people trying to blend in with the "good" commoners. I prefer this game to mafia because no one needs to die thus everyone is involved at all times , the narrator can be a player themselves, the missions in the game help facilitate the game better than arbitrary discussions in mafia.
This game is actually from a series. The first game is called The Resistance. Avalon is essentially a more cleaned up version of The Resistance and it has a King Arthur theme haha.
It is very well balanced so it's not as easy for good or evil to over power each other. You do not need to know anything about the first Resistance game to play Avalon.
Very fun game for anyone who is familiar with The Resistance. This game can replace basic "The Resistance" game but it can also play with special roles, transforming the game and increasing the difficulty if you want to.
You can choose to play with no special characters, making the game exactly like the resistance. I know The Resistance expansion has some cards which give powers to some players but I am talking about the base game.
What I really like is that if you notice the bad guys always win in your group for example, you can add a different character into play that helps the good guys and vice versa.
There are multiple characters which can be added and they add a lot of diversity. If you do not have the Resistance, buy Avalon.
If you have The Resistance and like it, this is a great and fun upgrade. A great game of when you have a lot of players.

The ultimate social deduction game that I cannot get enough of. I finally got this, played it, and now I am reviewing this. The base game is the resistence, which follows the paradigm of the "good" guys figuring out who the "bad" guys are.
Bad guys control the information at the beginning of the game as they identify each other at the beginning of the game but lack in numbers.
While the good guys control the board by having the majority, but with no information to begin with. This is the reimplementation of the "vanilla" resistence above, where it adds special characters like Merlin, who identifies the bad guys, but has to remain hidden.
Mordred who stays hidden from Merlin. Percival, who identifies Merlin the good guy who knows all the bad guys except Mordred and Morgana a bad guy but unaware of which one is which!
And the assassin, who has the chance to assassinate Merlin at the end of the game. Based on the crowd, I have mixed and matched the characters - depending on their ability to perform social deduction.
Ranging from adding no special characters, and just playing with the base game to all the special characters, plus more!
With the special characters, it is incredibly easy to balance the game also. Must-have for anyone who is interested in social deception games.
Easy to learn, exciting board game for everyone also happens to be one of my favourite board games of all time. Easiest 5 stars I have given.

A well-produced game of bluff and deception that we play infrequently as it requires at least 5 players, and preferably more about 7 is good, I'd say.
It is based on the game Resistance but is obviously themed around the King Arthur and Mordred story, and it has additional mechanics e.
Artwork is excellent and the entire package is not too large and so is easily transported. Players receive a character card kept secret that will be either allied to Arthur good or to Mordred evil.
Some of these characters have a special ability. Each round a player acts as king and chooses who goes on a mission.
Arthur's side want the missions to succeed, Mordred's want them to fail. And that's basically it. The game play is interesting - there's plenty of opportunity to deceive and the game is fast and fun and intriguing from the very start; if you're good you don't know who to trust - unless you're Merlin, who knows exactly who the evil players are but who must not give away his own identity as, if the evil players correctly identify him, they win the game.
Given that the game lasts around 30 mins, it's good that players are never eliminated - everyone plays throughout. A great game!
This is one of the best family board games I have played. It is simple to learn, has no complicated details, encourages a lot of interaction, and moves along quickly.
The only disadvantage is that it works best with a large group. You can play with 5 but is better. The game is a variant on Are You a Werewolf, but with several twists that makes it more involved.
I won't describe the exact rules as so many reviewers have already done so, but in outline you are dealt cards which determine your role and which of two teams you belong to.
Different people have different information about who is in their team. There are two aims - to sabotage or complete missions and to find out, or avoid being found out, who is in which team.
Missions are notional - nothing actually happens. The game is about determining who forms the team for each mission, as the success depends on which side the members are on.
This leads to a delicious mixture of strategy, bluff and double bluff, lying and lie detection. I can't recommend is too highly.
Basically , those two things led to everyone getting frustrated and it wasn't fun. Thought I'd try one last time with Avalon, the rules are simple for everyone, the games are short enough to keep everyone's attention, though we played at least 5 in a row the first time we played.
Everyone is too busy concentrating on their roles to really get competitive, even when you lose, no one cares as it's the little moments of subterfuge or the discussion after about the turning points in the game that matter.
I've played this in large groups where I barely knew anyone and now with family and it's always great fun. Has to be my favourite party game.
The only downside to this game is that you need at least 5 people to play it, everything else I love. Avalon is the sister game to the resistance and in essence plays in the same way.
The group is split down the middle into the bad guys mordred's followers and the good guys knights of Arthur All the bad guys know who each other are but the good guys don't know who anyone is, oh except the the person who gets merlin.
He knows who everyone is but if he reveals himself he gets assassinated and the good guys lose. This is part of the hidden roles genre and requires bluffing on the behalf of the baddies who need to sabotage a certain number of "quests" to win the game.
This may sound a little complicated but I really do urge you to buy this game is you can realistically get 5 people together 7 seems to be the sweetspot.

A good game to play to get to know people as you're going to need to talk to other players. It is also a good game as, unlike Mafia a pseudo equivalent , no one is eliminated and people are always involved in the game.
The art work is good. Don't hesitate - just give it a go. Definitely a contender. It has a really good combination of Cluedo style strategy, with the more parlor game mechanics of articulate.
The game gets even better the more people playing, however, it would be really nice if there were official rules available for how to deal with greater than 10 players as you do have the character cards available, just no play mats for that many!
Fantastic game for players. If you enjoy being duplicitous and playing games of trickery, I cannot recommend this highly enough. Some people that I have played this with have mentioned that they found it quite stressful trying to be deceitful, and that has tarnished their enjoyment.
Quality of the tokens and boards is good, instructions are simple and well laid out - but pick your other players with some care, playing with your significant other may result in some relationship-based strife!

Very much like other similar games like coup and the resistance but with a good theme and well known characters.
Resistance on its own gets a bit boring so its nice to have the extra characters. The downside is that these sorts of games are best with more people - so usually party type situations.
The effort of getting people to close their eyes in resistance so that spies can see each other is hard enough but adding in other elements such as merlin requiring another step in the open and close eyes part means that in reality setting up the game can be very frustrating.
I love the artwork and simplicity of this game. I admit that much of the gameplay can be achieved by a standard pack of playing cards, but the Avalon card game makes it simple and easy with all the information you need to play the game and its variety of modifying rules.
A must game for a boardgame group and easy enough to teach people who aren't into tabletop or boardgames. One of the best games I've ever played - very similar to it's sister 'The Resistance' Standard version.
The sweet spot seems to be around 7 or 8 people, so better for larger groups, though it can be played with as few as 5 and is still enjoyable.

At the start of the game, one third of the set of players not rounded up is randomly and secretly chosen to be government spies infiltrating the rest of the group the Resistance.
One of the players either a spy or Resistance member is selected to be the Mission Leader. The government spies are made aware of each other without the Resistance knowing — the only thing the Resistance knows is how many government spies exist, not who they are.
This process is conducted by the first Mission Leader, who instructs the group to close their eyes, for the spies to open their eyes and see each other, for the spies to close their eyes again, and then for everyone to open his eyes and begin the game with long pauses at each stage.
Players may never reveal their identity cards to other players unless the game is being played with "Plot Cards" as discussed below.
During each round of the game, the player to the left of the previous Leader becomes the new Leader. The Leader selects a certain number of players to send out on a mission , starting with Mission 1.
The table below shows the required number of players to go out on each mission. All of the players then discuss the Leader's choice and, simultaneous and in public, vote  on whether to accept the team make-up or not.
If a majority of players votes no to the proposal or if it is a tie, leadership passes on to the next player to the left, who proposes his own mission.
This continues until a majority of players agrees with the current Leader's mission assignment. After five rejected mission proposals in a row, the Spies automatically win that mission.
Once a mission team is agreed on, the players then "go" on the mission. To "go" on a mission, players on the mission are given a set of Mission Cards, one for indicating Success, the other indicating Fail.
Each player turn in, face down, a Mission card. Resistance players are required to play a Mission Success card. Spies may either secretly turn in a Mission Success to keep their identity a secret or Mission Fail to win the mission with the risk of their identity being revealed card.
The cards are shuffled and then revealed. If all cards show Success, the Resistance earns one point. If even one card shows Fail, the spies have sabotaged the mission and earn one point except for the above-noted exceptions on Mission 4, where it may be necessary for 2 Fail cards to be played in order for the mission to fail.
In the game's second edition, the full game comes with several additional Plot Cards which are handed out by the Leader at the start of each round.
Plot cards have special effects when played. These effects allow a player to view specific hidden information, or to change the usual flow of play.
The Plot Cards are not included in the third edition, though the Inquisitor role is. A variant of The Resistance was released in called Avalon.
The gameplay is significantly changed by the addition of a role called Merlin , a good player who is told at the beginning of the game who the evil players are.
If the evil players lose the game, however, they have one last chance of redeeming themselves by correctly guessing Merlin's identity.
If they can do this, the evil players win. As well as the Loyal Servants of Arthur and the Minions of Mordred, there are character cards with special powers.
Percival, on the side of Good, knows who Merlin and Morgana are at the start of the game, but not which player is Merlin and which player is Morgana.
Percival must ascertain who is Merlin and then protect them. Mordred, on the side of Evil, does not reveal his identity to Merlin at the start of the game, leaving Merlin in the dark.
Oberon Evil , does not reveal himself to the other Evil players at the start of the game, nor does he gain knowledge of the other Evil players.
Morgana, on the side of Evil, appears to Percival as potentially Merlin. Hidden Agenda introduces three rule modules to the base game that may be played alone or combined with one another.
The Plot Thickens adds new rulesets to the game and includes new copies of base game components including character cards, mission cards, and tokens.
